Mike Lunney
Mike Lunney has enjoyed a career of 31 years as a head band director. He has taught in
Throckmorton, Electra, Holliday and at Wylie High School of Abilene. His ensembles have been
consistent sweepstakes winners and his bands have advanced to the UIL state marching contest
for a total of 7 times placing as high as third place bronze medal finalist. His bands have also
made numerous appearances at the state level in both TMEA honor band and the ATSSB
outstanding performance series. In addition, his jazz groups have been successful at the
region/state level as well as earning several outstanding jazz band awards at various festivals.
Mike is a proud graduate of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. He was inducted into
the Abilene Wylie High School Hall of Honor and has received the Teacher of the Year Award
while band directing at Abilene Wylie High School.
He is proud to have performed with the Sky Ryder Drum and Bugle Corps in 1981,1982 and
1983. He credits much of his musical growth to being a member of the corps. The music, life
experiences and leadership training from those three years greatly shaped his career over the
next three decades.
In addition, he is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters
Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and is proud to be a member of the Texas
Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. He has also been of service as a member of the Music Advisory
Committee and as a state level representative of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association on
the CSAPP committee.
Mike is retired from full time teaching. He is now freelance working and living in Abilene, Texas.
He splits his time between doing numerous band clinics, conducting region honor bands,
mentoring directors and spending time with his family. His son Dr. Austin Lunney and daughter-
in-law Brenna reside in Abilene, Texas and are the parents of Mike’s amazing grandsons. They
are five year old Grant and three year old Cason!
